A YEAR-LONG COMMUNITY PROJECT

The MacLaren Art Centre is excited to open four new exhibitions to the public, including one that will be shaped and driven by the community.

Titled Anchor Point, this yearlong project will feature work from MacLaren’s permanent collection and will be curated with input directly from the community. MacLaren hopes this project will reveal new insight into their collection along with bringing a broad range of voices into dialogue with historical and contemporary art, as well as traditional collecting practices. This dynamic exhibition will be an exciting artistic process where every few months, the curation will begin anew with a fresh piece of artwork.

Acting as an extended solo exhibition to coincide with Anchor Point, Toronto-based artist and writer, Fransisco-Fernando Grandados will be occupying the in-between spaces of The MacLaren Art Centre for a full year. These pieces will include site-specific installations, moving images, text, along with public and participatory projects.

Also featured at The MacLaren Art Centre this season will be Rachel MacFarlane: Broken Images, Where the Sun Beats. Instead of capturing landscapes as simple empirical recording, the artwork in this collection aims to capture a central tension of our experience of the natural world. It cautions those who wish to experience nature, to do so fully. “It’s about capturing a moment in the space, rather than just the space itself,” said Rachel MacFarlane.

The final exhibition is another drawn from Maclaren’s permanent collection and features thirty-three works along with five special edition prints exploring the complexity of the skull. Henry Moore: Elephant Skull used delicate and sensitive line work to take viewers on a journey around and through the elephant’s skull. This exhibition was also created in partnership with a student from Georgian College’s Museum and Gallery studies program!

Maclaren will kick off their winter exhibitions with an opening on December 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All are welcome!
