Get creative and celebrate the coming of Spring with regional artist Mariya Blyznyuk. In this special workshop, youth will learn all about an important Ukrainian symbol and tradition that decorated the home for the biggest spring holiday.

Birds have long been important and revered in Ukrainian folk culture. Ritual cookies were baked in the form of birds, and toys were made. Bird images are found in all types of Ukrainian applied arts. Many different fairy tales, legends, proverbs, and sayings have been composed about birds; they are often mentioned in Ukrainian songwriting.

Symbolic bird decorations were hung in houses from rafters, they flew around the house and were beautiful decorations for the holidays. Guided by Blyznyuk, participants will create their own festive bird decoration using foam eggs, modeling clay and wings and a tail made with coloured papers. Register early as spots are limited!
