Arnaud Maggs: Scrapbook

Arnaud Maggs

Arnaud Maggs, Scrapbook (3), 2009, chromogenic print, 1/5, 48.5 x 67.5 cm. Collection of the MacLaren Art Centre, 2010. Purchased with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance program and a bequest from John Reesor. Photo: André Beneteau

Arnaud Maggs (1926-2012) was an eminent Canadian photographer best known for his serial, stark portraiture, often arranged in grid-like structures. Throughout his practice, Maggs photographed and documented typological systems, particularly numbers in sequential order, paper ephemera and inventories of labels. This four-part photographic work comprises page spreads selected from scrapbooks begun by Maggs in 1975. Together they represent an intimate archive of ephemera—including luggage tags, transportation tickets and drawings—revealing Maggs’ sustained interest in how we to collect, organize and cherish mementos.
