Wavements

Doris McCarthy’s career spans the history of Canadian art in the 20th century: born in 1910 in Toronto, she studied with Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald at the Ontario College of Art, and later taught prominent artists including Joyce Weiland and Harold Klunder at the Central Technical School in downtown Toronto. Known for her Canadian landscape paintings, Wavement #1 is one of her rare hard-edged abstractions, distilling the essential forms of a sunny beach scene into its simplest constituent elements. McCarthy passed away at her beloved home, Fool’s Paradise, in Scarborough in 2010. She is a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario amongst other awards and recognitions, and her work is held in many prominent Canadian collections.
