Rotary Education Centre

The MacLaren Art Centre is pleased to present W-Edge: Showing Pride, an exhibition of artwork created by youth exploring LGBTQ art history while representing personal reflections, observations and experiences.

Throughout the spring session, participants from W-Edge, our weekly youth art programme, took part in a special series of workshops led by regional artist Sean George. In these workshops, youth discussed the major events and issues that emerged from the social history of the LGBTQ community. The youth decided to create artwork that honoured and memorialized queer visual artists—some of the heroes and sheroes who opened the way for greater liberties and acceptance. One participant devoted her banner to two queer artists who are both alive, and are consistently representing themes that challenge the way we consider queer people.

These youth were particularly inspired by the Names Project (The AIDS Quilt), a powerful work that became the anchor for the queer community to bear grief, memorialize and support the family and friends of lost ones. The canvases will be stitched together to pay homage to the AIDS quilt and paraded with pride at the Barrie Pride Parade on August 17, 2019.
The artworks on view are by Jade Burch, Emily Fraser, Grace Garroway, John O’Neill and Piper Sawyer.
W-Edge is a free drop-in studio art programme for youth ages 14 to 18, Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm from September to June. This programme takes place in the MacLaren Rotary Education Centre. Materials provided. Newcomers are always welcome!
