Description
Gaganoonidiwag/They Talk To Each Other explores how artists Joel Richardson and Nyle Miigizi Johnston have been talking with each other for well over a decade. Richardson’s family are settlers to Turtle Island and include United Empire Loyalists who eventually settled on Johnston’s family’s traditional land. Their conversations began with the blending of stories from Indigenous and settler perspectives. Merging historical facts with created narratives, this body of work includes mixed media and video components that follow the artists’ time travelling alter egos, Captain Jimmy Swann and Commander George Nadjiwon as they grapple with what it means to reconcile.
Join us at 7:30 for the first of four participatory conversations, Artists Living Their Lives. Visitors are welcome to come and go from this drop-in conversation where the artists and curator will discuss living life as an artist and explore how personal choices, family, and our histories affect what we create. Everyone will be invited to share their personal creative challenges as well as strategies for success.
Ron Shuebrook and Frances Thomas: In Conversation explores each artist’s serious engagement with abstraction. The artworks on display exemplify each artist’s highly skilled manipulation of paint to highlight wonderful connections between line, form, colour, and scale. The exhibition highlights the avenues of abstraction unique to each artist while celebrating their differences.
Come immerse yourself in a vibrant arts community, engage with the artists, and enjoy an evening filled with creativity and inspiration. The opening promises to be an unforgettable experience for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
