W-Edge: The Gif Project
W-Edge: The GIF Project
April 16 to May 15, 2016
Rotary Education Centre
The MacLaren Art Centre is pleased to present W-Edge: The GIF Project, an exhibition of artwork created by youth that transform the painted image, both representational and abstract, into an animated work of art.
Led by regional artist Sean George, participants in our weekly youth art programme took part in a series of painting workshops. During these after-school gatherings, youth worked closely with Sean exploring the visual elements of abstraction, slowly building sections of their canvas with alternating colours, patterns, shapes and textures.
In order to create a GIF (graphic interchange format) file of each participant’s artwork, a series of photographs were taken at various stages to capture the visual changes. At the end of the programme, each youth had a collection of photographs that were then inserted into a timeline, creating the GIF file. Please view the animated GIFs of each participant’s artwork below.
The paintings on view are by Rachel Bettencourt, Lucas Cimino, Sara Kelly, Daniel Mafturack, Natasha Pearson, Liam Stone, Emily Sutherland and Dylan Tantsidis.
W-Edge is a free drop-in studio programme for youth ages 14 to 18, Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Led by practising artists, this programme takes place in the MacLaren Rotary Education Centre. Materials are provided. Newcomers are always welcome! Join us this spring for W-Edge: Road Trip, a new series of youth workshops starting March 30, culminating in a summer exhibition.
Special thanks to Liam Stone and Linda Koenemund for editing and finalizing the gifs.
Our appreciation is extended to TD Bank for their generous support of youth programmes at the MacLaren.
