Reception: Thursday, April 3, 7 to 9 pm
This group exhibition features work by Calvin Chumbley, Mandy Gibb, Teresa Moore and Anna Wilhelm, all third-year students in the School of Design and Visual Arts at Georgian College. Each is attracted to the sublime: the belief that nature inspires equal measures of fear and attraction, that the immensity and power of the world is at once grotesque and beautiful, imperfect but absolute.
Each of the artists in The Material Sublime marries medium and process in ways that attempt to reconcile a central anxiety about the impossibility of capturing, in any single work, the true complexity of the natural world. The idea of the sublime and the sense of nature’s infinitude elude interpretation. This belief is central to the Romantic Movement, which emerged in the early 19th Century and has consistently served as an inspiration to artists that followed. Interrogating this concept is a life’s work and, in this show, we see each emerging artist begin to confront and unravel these enduring concerns.
