Narrative and Community
February 6 to 28, 2016
Rotary Education Centre

The MacLaren Art Centre is pleased to present Narrative and Community, an exhibition of photographic artwork created by youth exploring narrative, including childhood memories, personal statements and self-reflections.

Led by Reading the Talk exhibiting artist Melissa General, participants from W-Edge, our weekly youth art programme, and the Barrie Native Friendship Centre took part in this special photography workshop. Working collaboratively, participants shared personal stories while digitally overlaying text onto their self-portraits. The resulting photographs provide a unique glimpse into the memories, thoughts and statements of our local youth.

The artworks on view are by Lucas Cimino, Skylar Genereaux, Sara Kelly, Jacklyn Manton, Serena Parsons, Natasha Pearson, Justin Reynolds, Terra Sandy, Dylan Tantsidis, and Arizona Tillburg.

Thanks to Melissa General for leading this special workshop. Appreciation is also extended to Lisa Myers, Reading the Talk co-curator and Shelly Genereaux and Val Wood of the Barrie Native Friendship Centre for recruiting youth to participate in this special project.

W-Edge is a free after school drop-in studio programme for youth ages 14 to 18, held Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Materials provided. Newcomers are always welcome!

Thanks to TD Bank for their ongoing support of youth programmes at the MacLaren.
