VanGo From Home: On Your Mark

On your mark, get set…draw! In this program, students will explore mark-making by using a variety of contemporary drawing tools and techniques to create a unique composition. Drawing their name as a foundation for expressing different line qualities, students will create an abstract composition with a focus on visual balance, composition and the principles of design.


Materials Needed From Home:

  • 9 x 12 sheet (approx.) of black paper (can be construction or poster paper, etc.)
  • Printed copy of grid (click here to download)
  • Two sheets of white cardstock or mixed-media paper (at least 8.5 x 11)
  • A soft-bristle brush (can purchase at Dollar Store)
  • Small portion of black acrylic or tempera paint
  • A 6 cm x 6 cm pre-cut square template (you can use recycled cardboard, paper, or cardstock)
  • At least three small cups/containers (to dilute paint)
  • A medium and/or thin black sharpie
  • Black crayon and/or colouring pencil
  • Pencil, scissors, glue stick, or white glue
  • Eraser
  • Scotch tape
  • A clear and covered table to work
