Youth Advisory Council
Are you interested in art, community and volunteering? Dedicated youth from across Simcoe County are encouraged to apply to the MacLaren Youth Advisory Council!
This year-long volunteer programme for high school students, 14 to 18 years of age allows youth to share their thoughts on how to engage their peers in understanding the visual arts and the role of art galleries in their community. Please view the attached poster for more details!
Led by MacLaren Education Officer Tyler Durbano, Council Members participate in social and artistic events at the Gallery and in the community, including:
Events for Youth by Youth:
Get involved in organizing the annual Halloween and spring-themed Coffeehouses at the Gallery! Over 100 youth attend these events that highlight local musical and artistic talent. On top of that, Coffeehouses offer art/craft sales, exhibition opportunities and hands-on art activities.
Organize fun, creative activities for people attending Winterfest, Celebrate Barrie, Lawnchair Luminata, Carnegie Days and many other community events.
Public Art Projects:
Get the chance to work with professional artists, whether it’s painting a mural or assisting with the creation of an outdoor sculpture.
Workshops with Exhibiting Artists:
As a Council Member, you will get advance notice of special hands-on workshops for youth and a chance to register early when spots are limited.
Become a Gallery Guide:
Develop your knowledge and passion for visual art by becoming a member of the Gallery Guide team! Your job will be to lead exhibition tours for other youth.
The Youth Advisory Council meets once a month at the MacLaren Art Centre on Monday evenings. Members also participate in after-school and weekend activities.
