Claudia Mandler McKnight on Art Therapy and The Alchemy of the Creative Process
Friday, January 19, 12:15 to 1 pm
Rotary Education Centre at the MacLaren
Admission free

Join Barrie artist, educator and registered art therapist Claudia Mandler McKnight as she discusses art therapy as a healing modality, which combines the creative process and psychotherapy. Claudia will examine how art therapists support individuals to problem solve, increase self-awareness, strengthen self-esteem, manage stress and engage in social interaction. Images of artwork created by clients in her private practice and by community groups (Candlelighters Simcoe, Gilda’s Club and Hospice Simcoe) will be highlighted. The benefits of working intuitively, rather than rendering a preconceived idea, will be explored. For McKnight, art is a form of soulful reflection and meditation, working from the inside out.

Claudia Mandler McKnight studied Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art, and has exhibited in public and private galleries since 1984. She holds a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Toronto and is a graduate of the Toronto Art Therapy Institute. She is a registered member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) and Ontario College of Registered Psychotherapists. For over eighteen years, she has facilitated the art therapy and expressive art programme Candlelighters Simcoe, a support group for families of children with cancer. She also teaches the course Art Therapy, Spirituality, Grief and Loss at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute.
