Join us for DRAWINGLAB at the MacLaren Art Centre!

Join us on Sunday, June 24 for DRAWINGLAB at The MacLaren Art Centre! Inspired by the current exhibitions, families are invited to spend a day at the Gallery exploring drawing in its many iterations—from NFB short animation screenings to a hands-on workshop. This is fun for all ages!

Special NFB Animated Shorts
12:00 to 12:30 pm, Rotary Education Centre. Admission free

Nunavut Animation Lab: I Am But a Little Woman by Gyu Oh (4:42 minutes)
Inspired by an Inuit poem first assigned to paper in 1927, this animated short evokes the beauty and power of nature, as well as the bond between mother and daughter. As her daughter looks on, an Inuit woman creates a wall hanging filled with images of the spectacular Arctic landscape and traditional Inuit objects and iconography. Soon the boundaries between art and reality begin to dissolve.

Vistas: Little Thunder by Nance Ackerman & Alan Syliboy (3:10 minutes)
This animated short, inspired by the Mi’kmaq legend “The Stone Canoe” explores Indigenous humour. We follow Little Thunder as he reluctantly leaves his family and sets out on a cross-country canoe trip to become a man.Vistas is a series of 13 short films on nationhood from 13 Indigenous filmmakers from Halifax to Vancouver. It was a collaborative project between the NFB and APTN to bring Indigenous perspectives and stories to an international audience.

Mindscape by Jacques Drouin (7:34 minutes)
A particularly creative example of the pinscreen animation technique, this film is about an artist who steps inside his painting and wanders about in a landscape peopled with symbols that trigger unexpected associations. Film without words.

Tzaritza by Theodore Ushev (7:00 minutes)
This animated short by Theodore Ushev combines warmth, humour and magic in a story about a young girl who misses her grandmother. When Lili finds a tzaritza (magic shell) along the seashore, she hatches a plan to bring her Grandma from Bulgaria to Montreal to make her father happy. Part of the Talespinners collection, the film features music by Normand Roger.
