Akira Komoto was born in Tokyo in 1935. A graduate of Gifu University, he began painting, printmaking and photographic art practices in the 1960s. His first solo exhibition in Canada was at the Gallery Stratford in Stratford, Ontario. His work has since been acquired by institutions across the country. Komoto’s seeing series was the subject of a travelling exhibition organized by the MacLaren Art Centre from 1994 to 1997. His work is held in public collections worldwide, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He currently teaches at the Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo and lives in Kyoto, Japan.
