John Hartman (b. 1950, Midland) is a leading regional artist from Lafontaine, Ontario. He studied fine arts at McMaster University in Hamilton and taught painting at Georgian College in Barrie from 1986 to 1999. He is represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery in Toronto.

Hartman is known for his expressive paintings, drawings and prints that depict intertwined relationships between people and place. Ranging from personal to historical to spiritual, his subject matter is diverse but almost always rooted in landscape. In 1993 he had a solo exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Collection, Painting the Bay, which featured large-scale aerial views of Georgian Bay, painted thickly with narrative elements depicted in the skies. The exhibition gained Hartman recognition as a distinguished painter of the Canadian landscape. In 2003 Cities, a major solo exhibition, began its tour across Canada and was presented at the MacLaren in 2008. Cities further explored Hartman’s interest in the people and mythology around landscapes, featuring map-like depictions of place. With this series he turned his gaze to urban subjects, painting metropolitan locations as diverse as Glasgow, Manhattan, Vancouver and Toronto.

The MacLaren recently acquired eight watercolour paintings by Hartman, three of which were included in his 2012 exhibition Shore Line Over View in the MacLaren’s Molson Community Gallery, as well as a boxed set, Shorelines, which contains six colour drypoint prints, an original watercolour painting and a hand-printed description of the suite. Shorelines was also included in Shore Line Over View.

The eight watercolours portray energetic, experimental landscapes in the aerial style for which Hartman is well known. The forms, loose and verging on abstraction, are painted quickly and represent a more literal version of the landscape than Hartman’s oil paintings. In Painting the Inside Channel, for example, trees, a small figure with an easel, an airplane-like object in the sky coexist in world of dissipating forms. This small watercolour harkens back to Hartman’s work of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s which was often deemed “primitive”. Yet, the depth of the horizon and full range of his ultraviolet colour palette grant this and other works in the donation the same spatial grandeur of his oil painting. These watercolours continue Hartman’s relationship with Georgian Bay, but unlike his Painting the Bay series from the early ‘90s, they depict specific locations with a renewed vitality, more reminiscent of Cities and his output thereafter.

The work of David Milne continues to influence Hartman, which is made particularly clear in his colour drypoint prints. David Milne is known for having pushed the drypoint into multiple plate colour imagery, a technique employed by Hartman.  The six drypoint prints in the Shorelines boxed set graphically extract the subjects of his imagery, highlighting his line-work in an economy of formal elements. In contrast to Hartman’s usual aerial perspective, here the viewer is placed as if in direct contact with the landscape.

The MacLaren holds in its collection twenty-three large-scale paintings by John Hartman produced between 1982 and 1999, in addition to one monotype, three drypoint prints and eleven pastel drawings, most of which date from the early 1980s.
