Exhibition Submission Process

Exhibitions are developed on an ongoing basis. To remain responsive to the arts community, unsolicited submissions from artists and curators are encouraged, with an annual deadline of June 1. The review process that follows provides the MacLaren curators with a resource for programme development and offers a valuable means of keeping in touch with artists’ production. All submissions are measured with a critical eye and a generous spirit. Those short-listed are followed-up by discussion, studio visits and meetings at the MacLaren. Priority is given to exhibiting work by artists producing consistent, thoughtful bodies of work resulting from a process of concentrated investigation, reflection, investment and risk-taking, and work that has the capacity to engage public audiences on a variety of levels (intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual). Exhibition programming is generally confirmed two years in advance. Variation in media, presentational strategies and the use of the exhibition space—together with a respect for seasonal audiences and local events—influence the selection and scheduling of shows. Exhibition Submissions should contain the following:

  • Cover Letter
  • Artist Statement. (Please indicate the media, technique, theme or context of your artwork.)
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Maximum of twenty digital images of your work on a well-labelled CD. Images should be saved as jpegs, 300 dpi and approx. 5" x 7" large. In the case of video or performance based works, include a DVD
  • Corresponding list of images, indicating title, year of execution, medium and dimensions (h x w)
  • Relevant Support Material (articles, reviews, catalogues, etc.)
  • Self-addressed stamped envelope with proper return postage if you require the return of any material.
  • Note: Do not send original artwork.
