Carnegie Days draws on the origins of the MacLarenArtCentre’s building as a 1917 Carnegie public library in Barrie and celebrates the legacy of Scottish-born American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who built 2,509 public libraries in the English-speaking world.

Launched in 2009, this four-day annual arts festival offers visitors of all ages great events that explore the role language plays in contemporary art. From Thursday, September 16 through Sunday, September 19, exhibitions, public art projects, performances, author’s readings, artist talks, film and video screenings, guided tours and hands-on workshops take place at the MacLarenArtCentre and throughout the city of Barrie. Programmes are designed for adults and families and visitors with varying backgrounds, from the first-time visitor to the committed gallery-goer. Many events are free or admission is nominal. Carnegie Days 2010 coincides with the third Doors Open Barrie on September 19, which highlights local heritage sites, cultural attractions and the vitality of downtown Barrie.

Featured exhibitions include Arnaud Maggs: Lost and Found; Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak: ...bump in the night, Barrie; Andrew Hunter: The Burden of Proof; Titles 7; and Ed Pien: Enchantment. For complete descriptions of all of these exhibitions, see here

Featured events include: Opening Reception (Sept 15), MacLaren Legacy Dinner (Sept 16),  a special performance of Tales of An Urban Indian (September 18), a screening of The Last Station (Sept 18), and Doors Open Barrie (Sept 19).
