Toronto artist Katharine Harvey exploits the metaphorical qualities of water to transform the mundane into a shimmering, magical environment. A thirty-two foot high installation of water bottles, and other plastic objects, cascades like a waterfall from the skylight in the gallery. The empty bottles, gathered from the artists neighbourhood blue boxes, now suggest a deluge of what they once contained. The exhibition also includes several large paintings that capture light reflected through water. Harvey builds these luminous images from many layers of acrylic paint and gel, effectively suggesting the rush of water.
Katharine Harvey has exhibited across Canada, as well as the Painting Center in New York and the Canadian Embassy in Washington. Her recent presentations include those at Nuit Blanche, Gallery Stratford and Rodman Hall. Harvey has a MFA from the University of Victoria and a BFA from Queenís University. She lives in Toronto and is represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto.
