Call for Participation
In conjunction with Canadian Mental Health Week May 3 to May 9, the MacLarenArtCentre and the Canadian Mental Health Association in Barrie are extending a Call for Participation to youth across Simcoe County. Fighting the Stigma of Being "Different" is an Expressive Arts workshop on stigma, mental health and addictions, to be held on Saturday, March 27 from 10:00am to 4:00pm in the Rotary Education Centre at the MacLaren.
Led by Expressive Arts Therapist Jon Oelrichs, young people ages 14 to 24 who are affected by, or would like the opportunity to create artwork around issues of, Mental Health, are encouraged to attend. Those who participate will have their artworks exhibited in the Molson Community Gallery during Mental Health Week. This youth-oriented exhibition will also coincide with our fourth annual Gifts in Shadow group exhibition.
Fighting the Stigma of Being Different

This day-long workshop will explore stigma, its origins in fear, the lack of understanding, its corrosive effects and how it can be fought. Participants will explore and express their own experiences by making art. The workshop will be multidisciplinary, using music, movement, clay sculpture, paint and poetry. Participants will learn about themselves and each other as they share in making art individually and collectively.
The works created in the workshop will be exhibited in the Molson Community Gallery during Mental Health Week. The workshop is being offered free of charge. People who have personal experience with mental health or addictions issues and who have experienced or witnessed the effects on family or friends are encouraged to apply. Prior training or skill in art making are not important.
