Artist Instructor: Sunday Programmes for Children and Families

Reporting to the MacLaren Education Officer, the Artist Instructor is a practicing visual artist who works on behalf of the Gallery to deliver Sunday studio-based programmes for children ages 6 to 9 and families with children ages 3 to 8 from September to June. The Artist Instructor will teach children and families a variety of approaches to art making, employing a wide range of media while drawing inspiration from the MacLaren’s programmes of contemporary art exhibitions. In this capacity, the Artist Instructor functions as an ambassador for the MacLaren Art Centre as well as these long-standing programmes.


  • BFA degree or college-level diploma in the visual arts
  • At least one year in-class teaching experience with children and families
  • Sound understanding of contemporary art and artistic practices
  • Creative thinking and an innovative approach to programming
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Punctuality, flexibility and problem-solving skills
  • A current criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening
  • First Aid Certification is an asset

The deadline for applications is 5 pm on Friday, February 17, 2017
This contract position begins on Sunday, March 26, 2017 and continues through to Sunday, June 25, 2017. The Artist Instructor is expected to be available to work Sundays from 10 am to 3:30 pm (excluding Easter Sunday), as scheduled and assigned.
